On Saturday in Leadville, that proposition won't be as easy or enjoyable as it sounds. The Lake County Recreation Department will play host to the Lap-the-Lake 50 bike race. Cyclists may choose between a one-lap, 20-mile race around Turquoise Lake and a three-lap, 50-mile race. While riders will enjoy beautiful views of Turquoise with classic 14ers Mount Elbert and Mount Massive looming in the distance, the race is anything but a scenic cruise. Elevation on the course ranges from 10,200 feet to 11,500 feet, and there are numerous steep climbs to endure. But that's what makes cycling in the high country so much fun, right? The race begins at 9 a.m. June 26 at the Lake County Aquatic Center. |
