Special to the Summit Daily
By LAUREN GLENDENNING, VAIL DAILY EAGLE COUNTY — Local organizers of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge say the event is going to bring an energy to the valley all its own. The Vail Valley Foundation has the rare opportunity of hosting two stages of the race that will take over Colorado Aug. 22-28, and no stone is being left unturned when it comes to preparations. There's a local organizing committee, and then committees within that committee, dedicated to ironing out every possible detail before the race comes to Vail on Aug. 25, and to Avon on Aug. 26. Everything from technical logistics such as traffic control and route control plans, to marketing and public relations logistics such as advertising and lodging packages, are being sorted out in the coming weeks. The committees have already been meeting for months to plan for the event, which could bring as many as 25,000 people to the valley. People familiar with the Coors Classic, a major road cycling race held in Colorado from 1980-1988, might have a pretty good idea of what a cycling event of this scale looks like. |
