Boulder County is kicking off an initiative to try and get an accurate count of the number of cyclists rolling along local roads -- from Lefthand Canyon and Flagstaff to 95th Street and eastern Baseline -- with a volunteer bike count later this month.

"Biking is a really important part of the transportation system for the county, so it's important to track what's going on," said George Gerstle, director of transportation for the county.

Counting the volume of cars on the road isn't so hard. Transportation officials can just roll out a pneumatic road tube that will electronically count the air bursts created as wheels roll over.

But bikes are another matter. To try and get an accurate count of two-wheeled road users, the county's Transportation Department is enlisting volunteers to stand along roads at 13 points in the unincorporated county during the last week of September and count bikes as they whiz by.
