Changes coming to the Pikes Peak Highway
Thursday, February 09, 2012 13:44

(And I'm not just talking about the recently-completed paving, pictured above.)

At a Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting Thursday, highway manager Jack Glavan presented his annual report on the toll road to 14,115 feet.

The highway had 265,124 visitors last year, a drop of about 9,000 from the year before. (Yes, the rangers count individuals heading up the highway. At least those 6 and older, who must pay a fee.)

With the decade-long paving operation finally complete, officials at the city-owned highway will focus on other projects in 2012.

Expect a new entry gate and toll booth to be built this summer. Officials are also giving another look at the dilapidated summit house. They'll replace the leaky roof this year and Glavan said talks will soon begin with the U.S. Forest Service over consolidating the four buildings at the summit to two buildings. (Don't worry, tourists. You'll still be able to buy a rubber tomahawk at the top.)

More changes could be coming. With the popularity of the Assault on the Peak bike race, highway officials will soon launch a campaign to test the public's interest in allowing bicycles on the highway anytime.

Stay tuned, sports fans.
